History Of Paper Cups

Paper cups are an integral part of our lives. They are used everywhere - on trains, in schools, in offices and at hospitals. The exact origins of paper cups seem to be unknown, but records say that around the beginning of the 1900s, paper cups gained popularity. The popularity of these products can be attributed to the changing notions of health.

Long ago, people were drinking water from barrels placed in public spaces using a stationary glass. People were sharing mugs or glasses to drink water. Early in the 20th century, it was common to have shared glasses or dippers at water sources such as school faucets or water barrels in trains. This shared use caused public health concerns. With the advancements in medical science, during this period, people began to realise that sharing the same mugs, plates and barrels also meant sharing germs.

There was a need to stop people using shared mugs and allow them to drink fresh water without getting infected by others. This thought lead to the development of paper cups suppliers.

In 1907, Lawrence Luellen developed what is today known as the Dixie Cup to help improve public hygiene. He then designed a water-vending machine with disposable cups as a part of educating the public about the harms of sharing drinking glasses. Because of this Dixie Cups were originally called "health kups". During the great American flu epidemic of 1918 paper cups rapidly grew in popularity as sharing ordinary glasses increased the chances of getting infected.

The concept behind the use of this product has undergone radical changes ever since. From health solutions to everyday use object, the humble product has become an integral part of our life. Today millions of them have been manufactured for our convenience. They allow us to have tea, sodas and other beverages on the go.

Using Paper Cups for Hot Drinks

A common question we frequently get asked which cups we would recommend to our customers; this is a tricky question as it depends on the heat of drink you intend to use. We stock a wide range of items from single-wall plain paper cups, to our latest triple wall 'Ultimate' hot cups. The primary difference is the insulating properties of coffee cups the specific cup type.

Our Plain White or Mocha Single wall hot cups are perfect for warm drinks; however piping hot coffee would perhaps be rather uncomfortable to hold without the use of a cup sleeve (available separately). Due to their single-wall construction there is no additional layer to insulate the heat of the beverage.

Double wall and hot ripple cups are specifically designed to withstand much high tempuratures, the dual layers work in a similar way to a thermos flask; trapping air and isolating the customer's hand from hot drinks. In addition to this, the extra cup strength is ideally suited to 'coffee on the go'.

With different high street coffee chains and drinks providers favouring different disposable cup materials, it is interesting to find out which is the most effective insulator. Perhaps the most appropriate way to discuss the insulating properties of a paper cup is to compare it with another frequently used takeaway cups, such as the common expanded polystyrene type. This can be done by carrying out a simple test to show whether the polystyrene or paper version kept the liquid it contained hotter for the greatest length of time.

Paper cups vs Polystyrene cups

The heat retention test involves putting 200 ml of very hot water into a polystyrene cup and the same amount into a paper hot drink cup to find out which is the better insulator. For a wider comparison, you could also introduce a plastic cup into the equation to reveal how its insulation properties measure up. We all know each of these hot cups will provide a specific level of insulation, but this test will help show which is the best way to keep liquids warm.

How to Test the temperature

You can use a thermometer to test the temperature of the liquid. Taking a temperature reading every minute for at least ten minutes, then again around 20 minutes and 30 minutes, will help to show whether the paper cup is indeed the best insulator. You can record these readings as a graph if you wish to make the results clearer.

Heat retention

In an extremely similar test, cup and food container specialist Contexpan discovered that the liquid in both cups dropped in temperature very fast during the first five minutes, from around 100 degrees centigrade to around 90 degrees. However, at this point, the liquid in the polystyrene cup cooled at a slightly slower rate than the paper version, remaining at around 80 degrees after 25 minutes compared with the liquid in the paper cup, which had dropped to around 70 degrees.

The results

The findings suggest that the polystyrene cup is the better insulator, with the paper cup in second place. A third cup, a plastic cup, was used in the Contexpan test and this presenting inferior insulation properties, with the water temperature falling to below 70 degrees centigrade after 25 minutes. However, some catering supplies companies are now using double-layered disposable paper cups with an air pocket in between to trap the heat and provide an extra layer of insulation. Further tests would need to be carried out to discover whether this gives the paper cups the edge over polystyrene ones.

From the findings above, we would most likely expect the greatly increased insulation of ripple/weave paper cups to put them in first place with this sort of experiment. The ripples act like a thermos flask, greatly increasing the heat retention of the cups. Further tests are required to conslusively prove this statement however.

Biodegradable Paper Cups

Of late there has been a lot of emphasis on the use of Biodegradable hot drink paper cups. This has become a issue as traditional PE coated hot drink cups use non-renewable materials for their inner lining. Obviously this lining is required to make the cups watertight, so the only way to make paper coffee cups more eco-friendly is to replace the PE lining with an eco-friendly alternative.

The new range of Biodegradable Paper Cups use a PLA (Polylatic acid) lining instead of the traditional PE (Polyethylene) coating. Previously PLA has been mainly used on Plastic Glasses designed for cold drinks. This is because PLA would begin to dissolve if it touched a hot drink. The latest varieties are temperature treated to make it suitable for use with piping hot drinks; this advance has made the coating appropriate for use with paper coffee cups.

PLA vs PE coated cups

There is lots of erroneous information on the Internet regarding the environmental benefits of using PLA coating, primarily regarding the disposal of cups at landfill sites. Contrary to popular belief neither the PLA or PE coated paper coffee cups rot at landfill sites. These sites are specifically designed to prevent material 'rotting' as such, as this process released potentially dangerous methane gasses.

A main benefit of PLA coated paper cups is that the coating is made from a renewable resource, this accounts for roughly 5% of the material used for an average single-wall paper cup.

In order to legitimately state the environmental advantages of using disposable paper cups it should also be noted that they need to be recycled using appropriate facilities. This is true of both PE and PLA paper cups. Nether type of paper cup should be disposed of in normal 'paper waste' collections, potentialls this could completely contaminate the entire recycling batch! Currently, the best way of recycling coated cups of this nature in the UK is through the save-a-cup scheme. Specific collections are organised for paper cups, ensuring that they make their way to a suitable processing plant.

The drive from Jakarta to Semarang on the north coast

The drive from Jakarta to Semarang on the north coast of Central Java takes around 10 hours. The trip takes you up out of Jakarta and then through the small towns of Indramayu, Brebes, Tegal, Cirebon and Pemalang before you arrive in Semarang. At this time of year the drive is slow- the rainy season has started and in many places outside the cities the road is still only a two way highway with no median barrier separating on coming traffic. Typical Indonesian moments are frequent?where can you go when a bus is hurtling head on towards you at 100km/h and not slowing down? What to do when your car is mobbed by villagers voting for a new mayor...or passing the crushes carcasses of trucks, vans, minibuses and container trucks, you just have to wonder how long your luck will hold!

The route from Jakarta through to Cirebon follows the fertile coastal plain. This area is known as the ?Pantura?, from the Indonesian ?Pantai Utara? or ?northern beaches?. Lust rice fields line both sides of the road. The encroachment of commercial development is unfortunately eating into the greenery. Large malls, Ruko (shop) complexes and industrial parks are being built everywhere. In between these however is still some of the prettiest rice land in Asia. The farms are still worked traditionally and the effort that goes into the management of these pieces of agricultural land is impressive. Where the road follows the coast mangroves and other shoreline vegetation are interspersed between rough wooden shacks selling Crab, fish and shrimp. The Indramayu area is famous for its mango's- so many varieties and so sweet they melt in your mouth.

After passing through the tea town of Tegal (Old Dutch buildings mixed in with new development) and skirting Cirebon- the road leaves the coast and climbs up through the foothills. Teak forests and rubber plantation replace the rice paddies. The going on this section is slow- especially if the rain is falling, but the scenery is well worth it. The road climbs through the towns of Subuh and Batang. Roadside stalls sell a variety of tropical fruits-including the exotic Jackfruit and spiky, smelly Durian. This is not coffee country but I did take the opportunity to stop at a warung and try a local Kopi. The coffee was mixed with nutmeg ad red sugar- sweet and bitter at the same time. It was wok roasted robusta- ground up using a traditional sandstone bowl and pestle.

Semarang itself is a plastic cups manufacturers port city- located on a narrow strip of land between the coast and a divide of large volcanoes. During Dutch times this was a major trading port- serving as a feed for the hundreds of plantations located in the narrow strip between the north and south coasts of Central Java. The Dutch built an impressive rail system that carried the coffee, sugar, rubber, cloves and tobacco from the hinterland to the warehouses located along the port cities canals. The city is still the provincial capital for Central Java and is a very pleasant place. The hills above the city give fantastic views across the city to the big blue Java Sea. From this cooler altitude the volcanic peaks behind are also majestic- towering and dominating- dark, heavily forested and quite threatening.

Semarang has perhaps the best preserved examples of both Dutch architecture and Dutch town planning in Indonesia. The downtown area is filled with examples of Dutch colonial buildings. There are numerous old warehouses, offices, hotels and churches that are still now in use. Old ornate lamps line the wide streets. In this part of the city the traffic flows in an orderly fashion. As one moves into to newer areas of any Indonesian city the lack of recent town planning becomes increasingly evident.

Americans consume more coffee than any other nation on earth

American coffee? Technically there is no such thing, at least none that is grown in North America. There is such a thing as the American coffee consumer which might as well be an institution all their own for it's their money that drives a substantial portion of the market.

Americans consume more coffee than any other nation on earth. American coffee companies revolutionized coffee marketing, packaging, distributing, and even processing and roasting in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. America has sent troops to other countries to protect coffee growers and exporters from civil unrest. Yes, America is in love with coffee.

Coffee even played a role in the birth of America. Early British colonists revolted against Britain taxing tea. They exerted their independence by throwing cases of English tea into Boston Harbor during the famed Boston Tea Party. The early American coffee drinker was seen as paper cups manufacturers patriotic and independent.

American coffee retailers like Starbucks have created huge multi-billion dollar companies. They did this by providing the public not only a good cup of coffee but a relaxing place to socialize and drink their coffee. Starbucks did not invent the coffeehouse by any means. The earliest known coffeehouse opened in 1475 in Constantinople. But Starbucks definitely revolutionized the experience for American coffee drinkers and carried the modern coffeehouse into the 21st century.

Americans have taken coffee with them into every war since the Revolution of 1776. Whether to stay awake in battle or as a comforting, soothing reminder of home in the midst of bleak and frightening conditions or both.

In fact, many wars have been fought over coffee and the lands on which it is grown. From small scale turf wars to full blown civil wars and political revolt. Such as in Nicaragua in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

Coffee has become an integral part of every society it has ever been introduced to from the time it was discovered about 600 A.D. There is definitely something about the dark, mysterious and tantalizing beverage that captivates the spirit and captures the imagination. American coffee drinkers are no different and have adopted the age old addiction with gusto.

The ins and outs of the French Press

The ins and outs of the French Press

Is it even possible now days to have an absolutely best tasting, most full flavored coffee without traveling to South America? It is! And all the big coffee house know it too. That is why they are selling the ever gaining popular French Press. Now at first glance it looks like something great-granny on the wagon train might have had to make coffee. Well, except it now comes in stainless steel and slick black rubber. But the French Press is actually quite new. Yes, the Europeans plastic cup manufacturers had it before us, but even at that it is still considered a newer gadget in the kitchen.

The French Press, even for coffee lovers is a little intimidating to say the least. I mean, it consists of a glass beaker, and a plunger. Where is the plug in? Well, there is none. Meet the newest, non electric, coffee maker. Promising to give you the best cup of coffee available and right in the quietness of your own house. So how does it work?

First off - put on some water to boil. Why that is going, run the glass part of the French press under warm water to warm the glass. This will keep the heat in the press and will not cool down the water you put in.

Next - Grind your choice of coffee bean into a coarse grind. The coarseness of the bean will allow the natural oils to seep into the water faster. Grinding your own coffee when needed, will give you the best flavor too. Add the recommended amount to your press.

Now as soon as the water hit's a boil turn off the heat and allow the water to quit boiling. This means, you do not want to see the bubbles in the water. As soon as it has cooled enough you can pour it into the press. Make sure to keep the plunger up at the top. You do not want it to get into the coffee grounds yet as you might get some of the grounds on top of the screen.

Wait approximately one minute than swirl the coffee grounds and water around. You'll want to see a circular motion of the beans swirling in the water. You can also take a non-metal spoon and stir it up. Replace the lid.

After about 2 to 3 minutes longer you are ready to plunge. Using the plunger move from the top slowly, evenly, down towards the bottom. If you do it slow enough the coffee grounds will not be able to get around the screen. Continue pushing down until you have all the coffee grounds at the bottom and the plunger is still in place holding them down. You may now pour your coffee into a mug and enjoy your new found talent of making coffee in the French Press.

Plastic Cups and Lids: Smart and Simple

With the invention of disposable cups, individuals, businesses, and public places now have the luxury of stocking drinking containers without extra hassles. Individuals and families will often turn to plastic cups and other disposable drinking containers for large groups or serving in a hurry. With plastic lids cups, families do not have to worry about time consuming clean up or losing cups. Businesses often carry an ample supply of plastic cups & lids in order to provide employees with convenient drinking containers without creating extra clean up needs in the office space. In this, plastic cups & lids are not only convenient but often sanitary and cost effective as well.

Clearly, there are numerous advantages to this type of disposable drinking container. Although it is possible to purchase disposable cups made from a variety of materials, plastic disposable cups & lids are often preferred for several reasons. The primary reason plastic is such a smart option is that cups made from plastic are often more durable than paper or Styrofoam. Plastic cups may also be recyclable, meaning plastic cups & lids are more environmentally conscious choices.

When choosing the best plastic cups and accompanying lids, it is important to know the variations available. First, it is critical to select a size that makes sense. Plastic lids and cups come in a number of sizes, ranging from small three ounce options for sampling purposes to larger twenty ounce cups for sizable drinking needs. When prepping for a party, choosing larger plastic disposable cups may be a smart option, but cups of this size are often not necessary for small rinsing needs in the bathroom.

The thickness and nature of the plastic may also be a consideration when looking at plastic cups and lids. Some plastic cups are made from a lightweight, clear plastic, making them cost efficient and appropriate for light use. Thicker cups, which may come in a variety of colors, are often optimal for parties or gatherings since the bold colors stand out and the extra thickness improves overall durability.

It may also be a good idea to look at whether or not the cups can be purchased with accompanying lids. While some situations are appropriate for plastic disposable cups without lids, other situations may warrant the extra investment. Lids are ideal when cups are being used for travel purposes or when children may be using the cups. Most lids are designed to fit snugly over the top of a corresponding cup, with a straw hole to provide easy access to the liquid inside.

Disposable cups and lids may be available at a number of retailers, but for the best selection and prices, it is wise to shop online. This way, it is possible to compare products and gauge the full range of options before selecting the plastic lids and cups that are most appropriate. Ordering in bulk can usually help reduce the overall cost. For home use or office convenience, staying well stocked with plastic lids and cups and accompanying lids is simply a smart choice.

Everyone has had the Bad Coffee experience

Everyone has had the Bad Coffee experience and not many of us are willing to try it again. Once you have had the Good Coffee experience there really is no going back!

Good coffee isn't just as easy as percolating water through coffee grounds though. Bad coffee, of course, is really simple to make. But if you want the tastiest and freshest java for your morning wake up call, you need to take certain precautions before it even gets anywhere near your coffee mugs.

First of all, start with fresh cold water in your coffee machine if you want something delicious in your coffee cups. Steer clear of using water from the hot tap or water that has already boiled. For the best results in your coffee cups, fill your carafe with bottled or filtered water, especially if your home has old plumbing. Old pipes can leave an unpleasant flavor in your coffee mugs. This will also happen if you live in an area that heavily chlorinates its tap water or stackable plastic container has very hard water.

The temperature of the water is also important to deciding what ends up in your coffee mugs. The best temperature for brewing tasty coffee is between 195 degrees and 205 degrees. If the water is too hot, it could leave a bitter taste in your mouth when you drink from these coffee cups. Water that is too cool, on the other hand, won't suck out all of the flavor from your grounds, leaving no flavor in your mouth at all after sipping from these coffee mugs.

If you press brew your morning coffee cups, reach this optimal water temperature by letting your water wait for a moment after it comes to a boil. For your typical dip coffee machines, you can get a similar effect by pre-heating the pot. Do this by pouring hot water into the empty carafe, which will warm it, and then dump this water out to start brewing. This attention to detail will help to ensure that first mug of coffee is just what it should be.

Next, make sure you have the correct grind for your particular coffee machine. There is no, one all-purpose grind. You need to choose your coffee grinds from the two main groups, depending if you are using a press pot or an electric machine to fill your coffee cups. For press pots, you'll want to grind your own beans for about 10 seconds in your typical, inexpensive blade grinder. This will leave your grinds at a medium to coarse consistency and make for delicious coffee mugs. For electric brewers and other drip machines, you'll need to grind your own beans for about 15-20 seconds. This will result in a medium to fine grind, not to mention perfectly steamy coffee mugs.

There is nothing nicer after a hard days work to come home, put your feet up and relax with a delicious mug of coffee. Follow the simple guide above and be sure that what comes out your coffee mugs will hit the spot. Enjoy your coffee.

You might wonder is the net the perfect place for finding food and drink

You might wonder is the net the perfect place for finding food and drink goods or should I use the local dealers? more and more individuals that are wanting to purchase coffee products seem to be posing the same question, the simple answer is its just a matter of both patience on your part and close at hand product backup. For instance lets take an individual who is a purchasing acrylic coffee table and a mass of coffee focused accessories, such food and drink goods may easily be purchased from a district coffee supplier if you can in fact locate such a supplier. Lets imagine for example you live in New Jersey [ this can be relevant to a multitude of countries ], you would just track down the nearest food and drink merchant or coffee specialist with the help of compostable coffee cups the regional phone listings.

One disadvantage to hunting for coffee products near by is the fact that the assortment of goods that these local stores stock is usually far short of that stocked by the online stores, anyway lets presume the food and drink merchant did not have the item you originally needed however did stock a Guatemala Coffee product you might perhaps be interested in and a Jamaican Coffee product you might also want to chock out. Obviously your next move will be to go to the store to look over these coffee products at close hand, this is one of the clear advantages of visiting a local coffee merchant, actual hands on contact before you buy.

Being able to check products like coffee mug stencils along with cuban coffee sachets close up is a real bonus if a person is coffee shopping, purchasing online does have its good points however it isn't so good when it comes to looking at merchandise. The fact that you have real human contact with a merchant can often be a super bonus, lets say you purchase a electric coffee mug or even a Brazilian Santos sachet, lets also say there is some type of problem with the goods you have ordered and will need to take it back to the coffee provider it was ordered from, now it could just be a case of merely exchanging the item you bought for an identical item or another model. Merchandise returns in local coffee stores can take place very swiftly if you ordered merchandise such as a Old Brown Java pack or italian coffee roaster from an online coffee specialist you might easily incur both carriage costs and the inconvenience of having to wait for the food and drink dealer to give back your money or send you a replacement product.

Now another great thing about closely located coffee retailers is the information they can provide you with, lets pretend you visit your near by supplier because you are wishing to purchase a german coffee grinder it could be you happen to converse with the assistant in the store and just because of their advice in the area of coffee products you then end up ordering a different product altogether. Help and expertise in the area of coffee products can be freely found on the web but you need to know the right manor by which to search and find your required coffee information.

The build up of minerals inside the hot parts of your coffee machine

What is "Scale"?

The build up of minerals inside the hot parts of your coffee machine or espresso machine is commonly called lime scale. This term is derived from hard water areas in some parts of the world that have a high lime content in their water. In fact any mineral that comes out of solution from heat can deposit itself in the water carrying parts of your coffee machine. Typically this will affect your boiler, the pumps and any parts that carry hot water. Usually the areas where the water sits still for a while, such as the boiler are worst affected.

Is scale a problem?

The build up of lime scale will slow the water flow, reduce your boiler capacity and if left will eventually prevent your coffee machine working. Some boilers can end up with so much scale that they have heating problems.

How Often Should Custom Printing logo biodegradable disposable Biodegradable paper cup I Descale?

The time intervals between descaling depends upon many factors. The two main factors are the quality of your water and the amount of water running through the machine. I speak to people using bore water pumped straight from the ground who need to descale their coffee machine monthly. In some cities, in conjunction with a water filter you can use your coffee machine for a year or more without descaling. Try to find a water hardness test kit that will tell you how hard your water is. Your kettle is also a good indicator, if lime scale builds up in your kettle, you can count on it being in your coffee machine. If you use less water by drinking espressos you'll need to descale less often than if you make cappuccinos!

How Do I Descale My Coffee Machine?

Firstly, read the instructions that came with your coffee machine or espresso machine, if they disagree with this article then follow the instructions that you have. You don't want to void your warranty!

I recommend using a proper citric acid based descaling solution designed for espresso machines. This should be mixed and prepared as per the instructions on the bottle or packet. Definitely DON'T use vinegar, it's not good for your espresso machine.

You need to descale your coffee machine while it's cold. Put the prepared descaling solution into the water reservoir, turn on the machine and pump water (not steam) through the steam nozzle for about 20 seconds. If your espresso machine doesn't have the facility to pump water this way then pump it through the group handle without the handle in place. Immediately turn off the machine.

Your espresso machine is now cold with the descaling solution inside the water components. The limescale will be dissolving while you wait. After about 10 minutes turn the machine on again and pump more water through for about 1 minute. Turn the coffee machine off again and wait for the descaling solution to do its work.

While you're waiting for the descaling solution to eat away at the limescale build up, take the opportunity to clean other parts of your coffee machine. Pull apart your group handle and clean it out. Get all the burnt milk off the steam spout and wipe the outside of the machine.

Keep repeating the steps above until the water reservoir is empty. All the solution should have been pumped through the machine and the limescale will have been removed. This should take about 5 cycles and about 1 hour.

You now need to clean the bitter tasting descaler from your espresso machine. Thoroughly rinse the water container in your machine and fill it with fresh clean water. Run the entire container through your machine. Repeat this process again and your coffee machine or espresso machine is now descaled!! Make at least one coffee and throw it out to make sure all the descaling solution is gone.

Now that you've got a sparkling clean coffee machine treat yourself to a great cup of coffee!
